Pokémon 151ぴき大集合トランプ

A furoku, a giveaway bound into a Japanese magazine, rather than a retail product. It shipped with the monthly Terebi-kun in a clear plastic trump case, inside a printed paper wrapper. Being a furoku it carries no JAN, and none is expected.

Dating, and what it rests on. The deck prints only てれびくん 2月号ふろく, a February issue with no year on it anywhere. This archive dates it to the February 1998 issue, on sale 27 December 1997, and two independent things point there. The card back carries the anime copyright block, TV Tokyo, ShoPro and JR Kikaku, and the anime first aired in April 1997, so a February 1997 issue could not have carried it. A companion stamp sheet sold alongside the deck prints 1997年12月27日発行 on its own footer, and a Japanese monthly issued on 27 December 1997 is the February 1998 issue. Most sellers title the deck 1997, which is the on-sale year rather than the issue. The year is not bound. Binding it needs a photograph of the magazine cover or indicia showing the issue with its year. Until that exists this page prints the reasoning rather than the certainty.

What a row means here. Every Ace is Pikachu alone. The number cards each carry two to four Pokémon, and the row names the first of them with the rest listed underneath, because inventing one headline Pokémon for a card that shows four would be a guess. The face cards are single art cards, one starter line per suit. Card order is roughly National Pokédex order but not strictly, so no row here is derived from a number: every one was read off a photograph. On spades the male Nidoran line sits on 9 and the female line on 10, which is the reverse of dex order and exactly what a page built from dex order would have printed backwards.
